Hazard Steven’s letters of correspondence to his family – his aunt Mary W Hazard. He wrote the letter from Newport News, Virginia on July 27, 1862. In the letter he has drawn a map of the Big Bethel in Virginia describing the Union forces which were being headed by the General Benjamin Butler and how they were defeated brutally on June 10. Major Theodore Winthrop was also killed at the beginning of the battle. He goes to describe that how the men and troops of Major Butler were all killed in an open field.
